Towards the twilight of President Obama's glorious two terms in office come 2016, people will realize how the virtuous power of his patience set the course for a progressive golden age. We all seem to be blaming each other in this post election aftermath in terms of improper strategy, but I am of the minority of progressives who feel that this past midterm election of 2010 will end up being the driving force for a new progressive revolution.
The more this presidency unfolds, the more it unfolds according to President Obama's ultimate long-term plans for the United States.
Let me explain below the fold....
Political svengalis of the mainstream media speak of the Democrats as a bunch constantly "reeling" and in "disarray." The GOP tendency to tote the party line is something lacking with the undisciplined democrats, the meme goes. So smug in their pathetic analyses of this past election, these pundits relish any chance they have to pour on the sweet negativity to let the public beware of the progressive misfortune. And so, the president started his term with this entrenched, false, "certainty" with the media.
Transformation requires time and patience. These two virtues are lacking in our society and therefore we should never have expected that this transformative president will have been able to change our direction as a country back towards good fortune in only two years of one term. For a society to change, it must first see the error in going with the ways of the past and accept that progress requires an upgrade in perspectives and thinking. 2010 was bound to be a defeat year in terms of "progress" during the midterm election. But this defeat is now a means for the president to demonstrate the dangers of moving towards the direction of the GOP, and he likely is predicting that the GOP will proceed exactly as he plans.
President Obama has already been able to accomplish so much; Education reform, Financial reform, efforts to boost the economy (to the best of his ability, while dealing with a hostile opposition), Health Care reform, repeal of DADT....etc, etc, etc. Yet it seems that his motives are constantly questioned and he is constantly doubted in terms of his ability to lead our society to a more promising future. Yes, of course there have been, are and will be disappointments we have in terms of where the president stands on details in policy issues. But his core beliefs are solidly progressive, no doubt, and his win in repealing DADT does more to ensure that this president is with progressives in his heart.
No president is perfect and he is sure to have known that it was politically unwise to spend tremendous political capital to achieve THE major progressive goal of Health Care reform. But he pursued this goal with his heart and continues to pursue his goals, to the best of his ability considering the circumstances. He is a pragmatist and although the idealism of our progressive hearts is successful in our own minds, we unfortunately are not of the majority and our core ideals are not the core ideals of the society, at large. It takes compromise, sometimes to an EXTREME sense, to achieve the transformative change we all voted for in 2008, which will be proven come 2016.
So 2010 ended up as a political catastrophe, so to speak, the meme goes. Now we will have a House that is emboldened to defeat the president at all costs. These misanthrope GOP thugs already have shown their irresponsible nature in that they will take the country hostage in order to spite the president. Their greed collectively has spoiled each GOP member's political soul and it will be shown during these next two years how callous these GOP representatives and senators will be in their attempts to derail the president's agenda. This is all part of the long term plan and this president is the BEST person to lead this country through the travesties the GOP will surely inflict upon us.
See, the president knows that emboldening the GOP will actually work to his benefit both politically and for the rest of the country. The DREAM act fails to pass the filibuster and now the GOP will NEVER have any Latino support for the next few generations of future elections. John McCain tried his hardest to derail the repeal of DADT and thus revealed his utterly hackneyed Republican belief that it is okay to discriminate against others.
President Obama's value system as a leader is inspired by the beliefs of Gandhi and Martin Luther King, Jr. Gandhi once said,
First they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fight you, then you win.
Progressives have been ignored for years. Democrats never were able to convey their complex core values within a media so entrenched in pushing the "democrats in disarray" meme. And so the corporate media laughs and leads towards the formation of FOX news, a station dedicated to laughing at and/or fighting Democrats. But FOX leads to the Tea Party and the Tea Party leads the country to "fear" the change representated in our president. and 2010 midterms come and the FOX-led media laughs at the Democrats travails. The GOP laughs and takes advantage and used doom and gloom successfully while the Democrats could never accomplish much change. And this may seem horrible in the short term, but believe me, this president knows that 2010 really isn't as bad as it seems.
The "failures" of 2010 will bring forth a demonstration of what it is like to have nihilists running government in the likes of the GOP, now filled with the most extreme of extreme reactionaries you can get. And with that demonstration of complete and utter hypocrasy, society will see the error of the political system brought forth by the Ronald Regan generation. With that demonstration of what it is like to have the GOP in charge, we will see this president be reelected with a huge mandate as progressives return back to the House.
You see, I predict that his president will still be able to achieve many victories albeit in a backdoor approach. He will HAVE to compromise in many ways but his negotiations are based on knowing that nihilists care in nothing, except only advancing themselves. The GOP has no direction and cannot think in the long term. And while not much in terms of a progressive agenda can be accomplished with a divided congress......it will usher in a new political day come November 6, 2012. President Obama will be reelected, the Democrats will sweep back into power with gains both in the House and the Senate and a new political era will reign, the post Barack Obama glory of American renewal.
Transformation and change takes time, and one term definitely isn't enough to change the course of our collective future as a nation. President Obama needs to be reelected as his leadership in always fighting with the courage of his core convictions (in his own way, not in the way we would like him to fight) will guide this country to modernity. Know Hope!
