Please read this.
Because I love you all, I want you all to stay alive. So tonight when you drink, please please PLEASE do not drive. Either drink at home or get a taxi or take public transport (which is free in some areas tonight) or get a sober friend to drive.
It is not worth it. I lost a friend to a drunk driver back in High School. No one should have to go through that pain. Think of your families and other loved ones tonight.. most of all THINK OF YOURSELVES.
Have fun but do it safely.
Please.
I am not a killjoy but I know what it is like to go to a funeral of a friend who was killed by someone who did not think before they got in the car.
When you drink its very hard to make rational choices so make them BEFORE you drink. If you go out give your keys to a sober person and tell them not to give them to you no matter what. Better yet... stay at home or a friends place if you go drink. Take a taxi. I don't care what you do as long as you stay alive.
My friend was killed on New Years Eve in New Zealand in 1995. We were both in High School. She had not long had her license. She was heading home just before 9pm from another friends house. She had not been drinking... she never drunk. She was 17 years old. She was five minutes away from home. Her parents were waiting for her when a man who was 3 times over the legal limit turned around a corner at almost 100 kms. She had her seat belt on but the impact killed her outright.
I will never forget seeing her parents at the funeral four days later. I hope never to see that anguish on anyone's face ever again. I had no words to comfort them on the loss of their only daughter.
I don't want to have to feel that way again. So please don't drink and drive. I care too much about everyone here.
Thank you for reading this. Have a Happy and SAFE New Year.
P.S - I hope this doesn't come across as someone who thinks y'all drink and drive. But i know how irrational some people get after a few drinks. My father drunk a lot. When he was sober he was a perfectly rational person but after drinking he drove a few times. It was pure luck that he didn't kill himself or anyone else. He does not do it anymore... after his heart attack he drinks way less now and walks when he does.
