The other day I offered free ebook copies of my novel, We the Enemy. There are some left, so I thought I'd try again.
As for gun control, one of the good guys in the novel says, "If you were to ask me if I were for or against gun control, I'd say yes."
You'll have to read the book to find out how that can make sense.
The novel, a speculative thriller, also wonders out loud if we have the Fifth Amendment backwards--is it really correct, constitutionally speaking, that we can't be made to testify against ourselves?
In We the Enemy, accused people have to tell the truth in court, and it's legal. Raises interesting possibilities, doesn't it?
But We the Enemy is a novel, not a sermon. It's about people and things that go wrong in their lives because of the way things are. In a near future that could evolve from right now, an organization called the Alliance has led the way in trying to deal with problems that include what passes for justice in our courts, gun violence, and, most of all, the splintering of "us" into hostile camps.
Here's the teaser from my web page:
Revolving-door courts spit felons back onto streets uncaught, unreformed. Madmen, madchildren, and criminals kill us with terrifying firepower.
But that’s changing in the Pacific Northwest—until the forces of the status quo strike back.
A college student who does book reviews for a university newspaper read this book and said, "A lot to think about, a lot to hope for."
I know, I know, it supposed to be sure death for a novelist to suggest that his book, in addition to providing unique, interesting characters and an involving story, could also make a reader think, even if just a little.
But then you and I are here on Daily Kos because we DO like to think, right?
And maybe the time is right to stimulate new thought on gun control—lord knows we'll never make any progress the way our political and social machinery is currently gummed up on the subject.
I will send you a coupon code for downloading a free ebook version, including formats viable on the Kindle, the Nook, your computer, and more. If you want to read a sample before responding, go here. All I ask in return is your feedback.
Please email me with your name, your agreement to provide feedback (think of a reader review like on Amazon), and that you learned about the book on Daily Kos.
We have a tough couple of years ahead of us until we can push the electoral pendulum back in the other direction, and it's unlikely that a mere novel can affect much change on an issue as emotionally powerful as gun violence. But we're about the future as well as the present here on Daily Kos, and this is what I can offer to try and contribute.
Best wishes to you all.
