The latest news from Libya is surprising. As happened in Egypt - though maybe it doesn't mean the same thing - security forces have been withdrawn from a number of cities and protesters have taken de facto control. (per AJE)
Eyewitnesses have confirmed over 100 deaths in Libya, mostly from direct fire by the security forces. In Bahrain, ALE repeatedly ran a hysterical bit of audio from a doctor at the only non-private hospital in the country. The doctor said that the hospital staff had been completely overwhelmed by casualties. Security police intercepted ambulances on the way to Pearl roundabout (or Square), and beat both drivers and doctors. (per AJE and We Are All Khaled Said)
Also - don't forget that a major protest is already planned for Algeria tomorrow. What's happened in Libya is likely to add some momentum to that action.
The impression is that the governments of these countries have proved themselves incompetent. Bahrain was supposed to be like the Denmark of the Middle East. The first response of the government to protest was to offer each resident several thousand dollars! Now, protesters have installed themselves in front of the hospital. They are now chanting for the fall of the royal family. At least they won't have to worry about the ambulances being slow.
Cities reported to be "controlled" to some extent by local people include Benghazi, Al-Bedha, and Tobruk - essentially the northeast of Libya along the Egyptian border. There has been some mention of attempts by government forces in Libya to re-enter some cities, and at one point it was reported that they were fighting in Sirta.
It would seem that the US State Dept. is trying very hard to get the government of Bahrain to refrain from further violence. It could be that Saudi Arabia's influence is greater, in favor of force.
