Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) will be addressing the full body of the Nevada Legislature today at 11:00am, and rumors of his speech have Nevada’s Brothel industry worried.
Apparently the brothel industry believes that Reid will call on the legislature to end the legal sex trade industry in all counties because it makes Nevada look sleazy to outside business’s.
Reno Gazette-Journal's Ray Hagar first broke the story yesterday after talking with George Flint, a lobbyist for the Nevada brothel industry, and Dennis Hof, owner of three legal brothels in Nevada.
Zac Petkanas, Reid's director of communications for Nevada, would not comment on the fears of Hof and Flint, saying, "We have not released the contents of Sen. Reid's speech." Petkanas said Reid's speech is still being written and edited.
"Harry is throwing up a red herring,"' Hof said. "Does he want all of Nevada to become the sexual cesspool that they call Las Vegas?"
Flint said Reid is mistaken if he thinks Nevada's legal brothels have contributed to a poor national image for Nevada.
Reid spokesman Jon Summers had no comment as to whether Reid’s speech will bring up the brothel industry.
Imagine that, after all these years with Las Vegas being called “Sin City” which includes an illegal and often violent sex industry, Reid wants to end part of what makes Nevada truly unique. And these brothels are located in rural areas of our State and the women are tested for sexually transmitted diseases on a regular basis.
State law prohibits Clark and Washoe counties, the two most populous counties in the state, from having legalized prostitution.
Nevada brothels pay no taxes, they just pay a fee to operate, here’s an idea, since Nevada is going through a budget crisis due to the policies of former President Bush, tax the sex industry. Better yet, raise the tax rates on the mining industry, after all, they are the ones that are violating Nevadans.
Nevada has some uniqueness that can’t be found anywhere else, just this past election in Eureka County, a race for the county clerk-treasurer seat was a tie, and the ultimate out come was decided on a cut of the cards, high card wins.
Things like that are part of the allure that makes Nevada, well, ...Nevada, and the same is true of the brothels in our rural counties regardless of where you may stand on the issue.
