As we've learned to navigate our way around the new site and appreciate some of its features, we're also discovering new things to be cranky about.
Like Facebook. I like Facebook. My Facebook friends are a large contingent of Kossacks who enjoy using that site to get to know each other in a different way. We share daily chores and discoveries and health issues and links and jokes and so on, and we share links to our own diaries or diaries we think the others might have missed. What we DO NOT LIKE is seeing our friends' names and photos on Daily Kos. Of all the emails and messages I get, this is the number one hot topic. It might not be such a big deal, but the conversation needs to be had. Who sees what? I only see things posted by my own facebook friends, but I don't know if that's always the case. If it is, who benefits? I sure as hell don't; if I want to know what my friends are linking to here, I'll check my facebook home page. What's the point? Can people opt out? Again, who benefits?
The second biggest complaint is mojo. Would someone please fix this problem? It may be a back-burner item for Markos, but it's the kind of problem that folks take very personally. When someone like our own hardworking belinda ridgewood finds herself losing bars and TU status while we can all see banned users showing five bars and the TU badge, what are we supposed to think?
Number three on the hotlist is just that. Here's what I said about this last week:
Part three of our old hotlist page was design elegance. One glance gave you the title of the diary and the subject line of the comment in your own diary or the reply to one of your comments. A click on the subject line opened the comment or reply. You could rec the comment, add a reply if you wanted to, and click back to the hotlist. If there were several entries, the ones you'd tended to changed color. I know some people didn't use this feature, but I used it constantly and I miss it desperately. I'm trying to get by with the new functions – which most resemble the comments tab in our old profiles – but they're not working for me.
While I'm back in last week's diary, here's another thing that hasn't changed:
Links in diaries and comments should follow the flow of writing. If I want to add a link HERE, I should be able to stop after the word link, open the link function and fill it out, click “add”, and see my newly-added orange link right where I want it. That makes sense, that's intuitive design, and that's what happened on DK3. Here, everything in the link function is posted at the beginning of the diary or comment and has to be moved. PLEASE FIX THIS!
Group user messages cannot be deleted. Still.
Messaging has no "select all" button. Still.
Recs don't stick. Still.
Not enough ponies. Still.
View of Russia from my house obstructed! Also!
Let's go, cranky people. What's your top complaint?
