I don’t know whose flag it was but I inherited the flag after my father died. The flag was in pristine condition but only 48 stars. My wife and I folded the flag and took it back to Planet Utah. Once I felt a little better I was going through the treasures that were part of my father’s life and there it was, a flag with only 48 stars. What to do, what to do? More if you take the leap.
I suppose I could donate the flag to a museum although without a background it’s not very interesting. I believe it might be a flag my grandfather carried horseback in a parade but I’m not sure. The best option I was thinking was disposing of the flag properly. I fondly remember taking part in flag burning ceremonies when I was a Boy Scout. While I fondly remember my Boy Scout days and think that some of their creeds are not a bad way to live your life, I wouldn’t give the boy scouts the time of day due to their increasingly exclusionary policies. I can’t donate the flag to the American Legion for slightly different reasons (have you seen the candidates they have indorsed lately). What to do, what to do?
My wife saw me sitting there pondering what to do with the flag and asked me what I was up to? I told her that I was thinking about properly disposing the flag. Hell No was her reply. I of course wanted to know why. She told me that there were only 48 states in her union. Planet Utah and Texas were excluded and she was happy to have a flag that reflected her views. In my years of service I dragged my wife to a lot of states, Planet Utah twice, so I could understand her views of Planet Utah. I suppose going to public schools in Texas might be her reason for excluding Texas but I’m not really sure.
So here I am today a proud owner of a flag with 48 stars. I still don’t know what we are going to do with it but maybe you have an idea?
