A word from Karl Popper for the People of Wisconsin and anyone who supported the Douchebaggers.
"The major thing regarding a change of government is this negative power, this threat of removal. The positive power to appoint a government or premier is a relatively unimportant counterpart. Unfortunately that is not what most people think, and there is some danger in making too much of the new appointment; for the nomination of the government may be seen as the granting of a licence by the electors, a legitimation in the name of the people and through the 'popular will'. But what do we know, and what does the people know, of the error or even crime of which its chosen government will be guilty? After a while we are able to judge a government or a policy, and perhaps we will give them our approval and therefore re-elect the government. Perhaps we can extend it our approval in advance; but then we know nothing, we cannot know anything, we do not know the government, as so we cannot assume that it will not abuse our trust."
-Karl Popper
No one who votes and who also does not know the future can know what will come of their choices. That is why a meaningful democracy requires participation all year round, not just on election day. You may not ever be able to make public policy, but you can always critique its impact on you or on interests you care about. Do not construe your votes on one election as an endorsement of everything a politician may do. Politicians in a democratic society do not require such loyalty as obsequiousness once you voted them in. As soon as they get out of line, start fighting back. Resist first and resist hard.
