Author, activist and media critic Norman Solomon has announced his intention to run for Congress in the North Bay district in California. He announced his candidacy by quoting Paul Wellstone, a shining light of the Progressive movement:

One of the most inspiring political leaders in recent decades, Sen. Paul Wellstone (D-Minn.), famously declared: "I represent the democratic wing of the Democratic Party." Today we need progressives in Congress who will represent the progressive wing of the Progressive Caucus.
Norman Solomon's writings have long been a bulwark in defending Progressive Action and Change. His once weekly column for the vital organization FAIR's website Media Beat provided a critical voice for fairness in our media from the Left. He has been a proud voice against war, against economic disparity and against social injustice from the Left for many years and now he is running for Congress.
The mission of DailyKos is the election of "more and better" Democrats. I can't imagine a "better" Democrat than Norman Solomon. He is an inspiration to anyone who values Progressive principles.
Living in the North Bay for more than a dozen years, I've often been moved by the extent of local progressive passions. Antiwar, environmental, and social justice outlooks are widespread — and deserve forthright representation in Congress.
Paul Wellstone was vitally correct when he said: "In the last analysis, politics is not predictions and politics is not observations. Politics is what we do. Politics is what we do, politics is what we create, by what we work for, by what we hope for, and what we dare to imagine."
Norman Solomon is exactly the kind of candidate we've been waiting for as Progressives. He is anti-war, pro-human-rights, pro-health-care access, and a devout advocate for middle-class and working-class Americans.
Let's get behind this guy before the corporations bury him in a sea of disinformation.
Here are a few relevant quotes from Solomon:
The cave-in on Bush tax cuts for the wealthy sets the stage for another pernicious agenda in the next two years -- undermining Social Security.... Tax fairness and Social Security are at stake.
So much is at stake for future generations and for the planet that we need to be willing to organize as if our lives and the lives of those close to us depended on it. Getting involved is essential.... We can turn this around. Sí, se puede.... It’s a cliché, but it's true, that if the people will lead, the leaders will follow.
Washington’s failure to respond to climate change is an abysmal betrayal of hopes. The coal and oil industries, along with other corporate behemoths, have managed to trump the interests of life on Earth... It doesn’t do much good for officials to agree that the planetary house is on fire if they won’t really fight for turning on the fire extinguishers.
From Afghanistan to Wall Street to the Gulf of Mexico, policies of military action and regulatory inaction are exacting terrible costs: in human life, economic resources and irreplaceable nature. Silence and inaction enable the destructive policies to continue.
I think it's time Progressive Democrats back a candidate like Norman Solomon. He's the best chance we have to stand up against the Powers that Be in our Democratic Republic.
