After following the Libyan revolution with complete fascination initially I've slowly swung towards horror as I watch videos on Liveleak and The Guardian. I've been struck by the absolute need to provide some sort of defense for a civilian population being slaughtered for daring to demand basic rights. Western Europe seems to want to impose at least a no-fly zone, which would have a measurable impact in terms of lives saved. All parties need a UN authorization to make the prospect politically viable. Russia in particular has indicated it would veto anything more substantial then selling arms to the rebels. After some thought, I might have a Plan B.
If measures could be taken to speed up the process (something I'm unfamiliar with), I have honest questions if an ICC indictment and arrest warrant for Gadaffi would be the UN endorsement needed. He's already being formally investigated. Not subject to Big Five vetos, and would mean extracting Gadaffi himself. If his men or his sons want to fight on, let them. I suspect rats will flee a sinking ship.
I have no idea how feasible something of this nature is. Im at work so time to fully research this isn't possible quite yet. So, I humbly ask fellow Kossacks to look into this. If this appears to be possible, it should have pressure to accomplish it. At some point we have to recognize that these are fellow human beings, struggling and dying for the things we take for granted every day. Our nation was founded on an ideal, and has a responsibility to stand up for those values and those who wish to share some of them. I'm not going to pretend like Libya's going to turn in to America's best friend forever, but whatever stances the country take it's population has a right to decide for themselves.
