Someone may have already diaried this, but if not, here's the story. The first female to run on a major national political ticket in the USA, died this morning at Massachusetts General Hospital while surrounded by family. She died due to complications from multiple myeloma, a cancer of the blood with which she battled for 12 years. NBC News has the article:

She was first elected to Congress in 1978 representing New York's 9th District, serving 3 terms. Then, as just about all of us know, she was selected by the Democratic Party nominee for President Walter Mondale as the Vice Presidential candidate in 1984. Her nomination was not only the first for a female, but the only one to this day for an Italian-American.
She also served as the US Ambassador to the United Nations Commission on Human Rights from 1993 to 1996.

I was in 9th grade when the 1984 elections took place, and don't have very many memories of Ferraro, but remember her being on the ticket. Being from a conservative household, I had those beliefs too, so Ferraro at the time didn't strike my interest. What memories do you have of her?
Sorry for the shortness of the diary.
