NEW ORLEANS-The Four-One Group, who have developed such exciting restaurant concepts as Bonnie's at the Spillway, Clinton's Combat Cafe', Back of the Net, and the Hornet's Nest, have announced their new project, Long's at the Library.
(continued below)
When the foundation for the Earl K. Long Library on the Lakefront Campus of the University of New Orleans was laid in the 1960s, it was designed to support four floors, even though only two floors were built, and it would be decades before the other two were added.
"We were startled to find there was more to the Library building than meets the eye," a spokesman for the Four-One Group explained. "While discussing possibilities to help improve the funding situation at UNO, one of the campus old-timers told us about the extensive basement built into the building.
"Back in the LSUNO days, old Governor Long thought he would be able to use the state-controlled university as a base of operations in the backyard of then-mayor Chep Morrison. He planned for a secret operations center under the Library. Of course, Earl sort of went crazy and Morrison died in a plane crash, so the basement went unused for years."
Long's at the Library makes use of the extensive basement space with two dining rooms and brewpub seating. The main dining room is decorated with a waterfront theme/feel, in keeping with their location right next to Lake Pontchartrain. The decor of the second dining room, used for overflow and also available for private parties, is inspired by radio stations of the 1960s and 1970s, a tribute to the classic radio stations of New Orleans like WSMB, WTIX, and WWNO, the city's public/NPR station, located on the fourth floor of the library.
"Unfortunately, the WWNO Spring Pledge Drive is ending today, but we hope that the station will consider setting up in the back dining room next year for a day or two. We're big believers in listener-supported radio," the spokesman continued.
The menu at Long's at the Library is imaginative and exciting. Start your dinner with an order of Bookworm Beignets or a cup of Card Catalog Crawfish Bisque. From there, move on to one of Long's tasty entrees, such as Banned Book Beef Bourguignon, or Oysters in Papyrus Puff Pastry.
For dessert, try the Farenheit 451 Souffle, which is wrapped in rice paper that burns off before it's served, or the Lie-Berry Tart. Top off your souffle or Long's classic bread pudding with your choice of sauces from "The Stacks," a delightful fountain pouring out glaze topping and whiskey-cream sauce.
In addition to the restaurant seating, you're invited to come and check out Special Collections, our brewpub. Enjoy a pint of our Lakefront Lager, or the Privateer Pilsner. Be sure to try the Red-Ink Red Ale--all proceeds from sales of those kegs go to helping WWNO stay on the air, since the station no longer receives direct support from UNO, and Congress is threatening to cut back federal funding to public radio.
In addition to these beers, Special Collections is offering an exciting dark brew to mark the pub's opening: St. Aug Stout. If you don't like it, an alumni of St. Augustine High School will paddle the brewmaster for you. Now that's a committment to excellence!
Long's at the Library is currently in a "soft-opening" phase. Because parking at UNO is so horrendous, look for the comfortable and distinctive Four-One Group limo buses at the lighthouse across the street. They'll run you over to the campus for one of two dinner seatings. If you're just interested in having a beer at the pub, take the purple bus.
