Have you seen this oldie but goodie - a cartoon from a few years ago?:
Somehow I stumbled on this recently, just after I saw this diary from Geekesque, and it filled me with deep regret for the countless hours I've lost of my life on DKos and reinforced my decision not to return after today. I realize all too well that I've written a "GBCW" diary before and then returned, but even that whole process was silly and childish, adjectives which describes a vast majority of what occurs here.
What I do see at DKos are front-page stories that cite news stories a few hours old with little additional interesting analysis.
I see diarists enamored with their own "eloquence" writing insufferable and self-consciously "deep" diaries.
I see diarists enamored with their own "celebrity" within the confines of these walls.
I see people working out their feelings in group therapy sessions which allow them to rant and rave but without anything productive happening. It's someone seeking out validation for how they feel, or seeking out a confrontation if it's not how they feel.
I see people getting into pie-fights and arguments that go absolutely nowhere, convince others of absolutely nothing, and generate no actionable forward motion that improves anyone's life anywhere.
I see obsession with rules and regulations on this site that literally make people angry and emotional.
And I have been guilty of all of the above and I'm incredibly embarrassed about it. I've not benefited one iota from the amount of time I've wasted getting into it with others.
Geekesque put it best when he said:
If you can't think of anything better to do with your time, then you aren't trying very hard. Figure out what makes you happy and do more of it.
Well, I'm taking that advice. No doubt I'm offending many here - not by my leaving (which I don't assume anyone gives a hoot about) - but by my description of what happens here.
But I really hope many others come to the realization that this is all a big time suck that helps absolutely no one.
Life is short, don't waste it because someone said something wrong on the Internet. I sincerely wish you all the best.
