One thing I love about this place is there are a lot of food lovers. And I love food.I love to grow it. I love to cook it. And of course, eat it. I didn't used to be a very avid food guy. My mom cooked a few meals a day. But it was usually red meat, potatoes, or something fried.
But then I went to college in Southern Louisiana and started to travel outside of the United States. I quickly found that food many people would turn their noise up at or throw away in the United States were considered a "treat" in the rest of the world.
Of course that is usually organs. But also other things we just don't eat much in this country. I thought I might mention a few "strange" things I've eaten and see what you have to add.
These first three are not really that "strange" and depending on where you live you might be able to find them. Oysters, alligator, and rattlesnake. The thing I like about both rattlesnake and alligator is how lean the meat is. Most places will fry it. I think that is a waste. Get it broiled. It will blow your mind.
Now given oysters are not rare or hard to find, but I think most folks don't realize there are dozens and dozens of different kinds. And they are all a little different. Find a few friends. Find a real seafood place with a lot of different, fresh oysters. Try a lot of different kinds and I can assure you, well you'll enjoy yourself.
I've come to like organs. Maybe one of the best meals I've had was beef heart. I swear to you it was better then a filet. My experience with organs is they take a little more time and care to cook. You can throw a chicken breast or hamburger in a skillt and have a meal in a few minutes. Organs take longer. But they are stunning.
I've also ate eyes. Brains. All kinds of things.
So what is the bizarre thing you've ate?
