Hello and welcome to my first diary at Daily Kos after the move from Swing State Project.
This map is a Republican gerrymander of Minnesota. Usually I crunch my own numbers for partisan leanings with using Dave's redistricting app but with a huge thank you to Roguemapper this is no longer required for the state of Minnesota.
Fortunately for Democrats Minnesota's actual redistricting is likely to be court drawn but in a world where Republican's had control over the process we could end up with something like this.
District number (colour) Obama%/McCain%
1st (Blue) 48.3/49.5 No incumbents live in the new 1st but an attractive PVI should give the Republican candidate the inside track to election.
2nd (Green) 48.1/49.9 Michele Bachmann, John Kline, and freshman Chip Cravaack all live in the new 2nd. Which might be less of a problem if Bachmann runs for president.
3rd (Dark Magenta) 46.8/51.4 Eric Paulsen’s district gets a bit more Republican.
4th (Red) 64.9/33.0 A St Paul based democratic vote sink. Much the same.
5th (Gold) 74.1/23.9 A Minneapolis based democratic vote sink. Much the same.
6th (Teal) 46.3/51.5 No incumbents live in the new 6th but an attractive PVI should give the Republican candidate the inside track to election.
7th (Dark Gray) 47.7/49.8 West-central and southwest Minnesota. Tim Walz lives in this district which has become markedly more republican and requires him to deal with a large number of new constituents.
8th (Slate Blue) 56.5/41.2 A district centred on Duluth and the Iron Range now looks to the west rather than the south for extra population. Colin Peterson’s home is now included in this district. I don’t know what the outcome of that would be but it can’t be worse, and would probably be better, than him continuing to win easily in an R+6 district.
