Our nation is now faced with enormous decisions about the legacy we will leave to our children. I believe that we need to address our fiscal challenges with a sense of shared responsibility so we can lift our fellow citizens up, bolster the middle-class, and fulfill America’s true potential. We have to reduce our federal deficit, but we can not do this by mortgaging the future.
Dear Daily Kos Readers:
Your engagement in progressive politics has been so important for Democratic success in Massachusetts and throughout the country, so I wanted to speak with you directly about my decision to enter the 2012 Senate campaign to unseat Senator Scott Brown.
I am running for the U.S. Senate because our country is at a crossroads, and we need a leader who shares our values and will work to strengthen our communities- not weaken them. From my tour of duty in Iraq as a Naval Intelligence Specialist to serving proudly as mayor of the city where I grew up, I believe I am that leader.
We have to continue to invest in clean technology, education, small business innovation, and infrastructure that truly drives our economy in order to be competitive in the future. Scott Brown ran as an independent, but he has consistently voted against the interests of this nation. He has not reflected my state's values – in fact, he’s followed national Republican leadership lockstep, voting with them 87% of the time. Senator Scott Brown has voted against funding for local police, firefighter, and teacher jobs, against funding for Planned Parenthood, and against unemployment benefits - all while plunging us further into debt by supporting the Bush tax cuts for the wealthiest. He says he's for the environment, but has doubted the science behind climate change. This is backwards and unacceptable. Our nation deserves better.
For these reasons and others, I know that Scott Brown is beatable, despite the media hype and pundits. But together, we have to stand up and demonstrate just how irresponsible and damaging his votes have been for this country, our workers, and middle-class families. I have an aggressive plan to bring this message and my vision to Massachusetts voters, but I’ll need your help to be successful. Visit my website to learn more about my candidacy, sign up for emails, and get involved. I also hope you’ll follow me on Twitter and Facebook.
We need to start right away to finally hold Scott Brown accountable and move this country forward. Thank you, and I look forward to meeting you out on the campaign trail.
Sincerely,
Mayor Setti Warren
