On this holiday weekend, it's pure Americana here at Dawn Chorus. Certainly birds are not concerned with borders. We welcome foreigners with feathers much more readily than those without - Canada Goose and Mexican Chickadee have a lot easier time crossing the borders than their human counterparts.
But there are some birds who are undeniably and without question American. On this Independence Day weekend, let's hear it for our feathered fellow citizens.
American Robin, looking quite steadfast.
American Avocet is probing for opportunity from sea to shining sea.
American Goldfinches engage in spirited debate over "Original Intent"
American Coots say "One if by land, two if by sea, eight if by Tomales Bay"
American Crow thinks about life and liberty, and considers pursuing some happiness.
American Bittern wades into a debate about some amendment or another.
American White Pelicans want to look their best for the holiday.
American Kestrel looking to the future.
I'm writing this on Friday and pre-posting, since we'll be at our cabin with sketchy internet connectivity. Julie Wolf should be adding more photos to this diary, so show her some love below...
ps - check this out ... peregrine vs. rattlesnake.
[The Julie photos start here]
The American Woodcock is an all American kind of guy: after courting the female and leaving her on the nest, he goes off to look for another gal.
American Black Ducks are the only ducks we get to call our own.
American Golden Plovers represent the spirit of great American Rod Blagojevich, who calls them American "F---ing Golden" Plovers
American Tree Sparrows are proud and dignified
American Wigeons are just so much better than those [scoff] Eurasian types.
American Redstarts show their patriotism through their colorful display of the red, white and... black? Orange? No, that can't be right. Actually, I don't even see any red.
Finally, of course, there is the American Bald Eagle:
