Had Grover Norquist been around in 1900 and started his no tax increase pledge and no taxes had been increased since then, the total size of the Federal government would be a only be $300 Billion today.
This is a calculation based on the size of the Federal Government compared to GDP in 1900 which was 2.7%. Based off of today's GDP the total size of Government Revenues would be $300 billion. It is not a completely accurate representation of total taxes that would be levied today under such a scenario, but it gives a good idea of what revenues would be at had no taxes ever been raised.
This demonstrates the absurdity of the No-Tax Pledge, if it is maintained over a long period of time eventually the government becomes inadequate to deal with problems. If this pledge had been in place for the entire 20th century, there would be no Social Security, Medicare/Medicaid, Unemployment or barely any government program. The government would be a essentially miniscule but this is what conservatives want. They want a government so small they can "drown it in a bathtub".
For a comparison to some of the big budget items:
Social Security- $761 billion
Medicare/Medicaid- $737 billion
Defense Spending- $685 billion
Grover Norquist is an extreme and dangerous force in the Republican party and his influence is pushing our government to the brink.
