After months of dealing with some pretty horrendous symptoms, I think I may have finally found the proper dosage of medicine to deal with the Myasthenia Gravis. For the first time in ages, I have minimal double vision, almost no drooping of eyelids, and not nearly the trouble swallowing as I've been having.
It's been a long week. There's a surgical option which can (but does not always) help in cases of Myasthenia Gravis. Since it's widely believed that an enlarged thymus can cause Myasthenia Gravis, the procedure is to remove the thymus. The problem is, the thymus is behind the breastplate, so one recommended surgery involves the same basic entryway as open heart surgery. In other words, they open my chest and then use a saw (!) to split my sternum.
This surgery involves a month-long recovery, which is kind of a nightmare for me.
But... it's not the only option, and it's not a rush. I'll investigate further-- there are other forms of thymectomy, some of which involve a small incision in the neck and a procedure going downwards to extract the thymus instead. I'm inclined to do some form of the surgery, but knowing the meds are working is a big deal for me, and gives me time to think and work it through.
Even if the surgery works, it may not be permanent, and it may not do more than ease the problem, as opposed to full remission.
But it's one more opportunity, given the right time, for me to find ways to heal myself some. I won't be doing it today, or tomorrow, but probably at some point in the future.
In the meantime, this is one of the best days I've had in ages, and I'm just going to enjoy it.
Of course, I have a lot to catch up on, both on and off the blogs.
Anything interesting happen last week?
