Revolution is a powerful word. It is a concept that, I believe, should not be thrown around carelessly. I have no overly idealistic or romantic conceptions about it. Revolution is a hard, nasty brutal business. Revolutions are usually disruptive and people, including innocent people, get hurt.
Revolutions are also very risky. Many times they can accomplish little and we can end up with a situation like the WHO said “Meet the new boss, same as the old boss.” It is not uncommon for a people to end up with less freedom and in worse shape than before. Like all violent acts it should be an option only to be done when all and any other peaceful means have been tried, the absolute last resort.
Having said all this, I am looking more and more at the rush of recent history. It seems that everyday we lose a bit more of our freedom, integrity and our way. The creeping and insidious forces of fascism take deeper root by the moment. Politically the game becomes more and more fixed by the day. There does not seem to be much way out.
I have to ask, is it time to take that last desperate measure of revolution? If not what other measures can we take and when do we need to start thinking of this as an option?
