Sad news today out of our neighbors to the north: New Democratic Party father-figure Jack Layton has succumbed to cancer at the age of 61.
Jack Layton, 61, dies after struggle with cancer
According to the report, Layton passed away at 445AM (EST, I believe) surrounded by those closest to him.
Layton was far more than a tenacious and outspoken politician; he was a remarkable leader and a staunch advocate for Canadian progressives. I remember reading a great deal about him during the 2011 federal election, which saw the NDP rise to Opposition Status for the first time in its history. Layton's dynamic personality, together with his ability to smooth out his rougher edges from earlier campaigns, was instrumental in his Party virtually sweeping the Parliamentary seats from Quebec back in May.
Layton message is worth listening to even if you're not Canadian. When you think of a model progressive President of the United States, a Jack Layton-style leader comes to mind.

Layton began his career as a Toronto City Councilman. He became head of the NDP in 2003, and gradually grew his Party's strength in Parliament in subsequent elections. When Layton took charge, the NDP had just 13 seats in Parliament. Thanks in large part to his efforts, they now have 103 and are the official Opposition to Stephen Harper's Conservatives.
Jack Layton fought his last campaign while battling prostate cancer. If he had been blessed with better health, he might one day have become Prime Minister of Canada. Instead, Canadians of all stripes are in mourning today. They have lost a statesman.
This American sends his condolences to the family of Jack Layton, NDP members and the people of Canada.
6:19 AM PT: Unfortunately I have to jump on a train in a few minutes, so I won't be able to keep track of this diary until later today. Please post your thoughts and memories of Jack Layton in this diary, and recommend it if you wish. Again, my deepest sympathies to those Canadians who liked and/or supported him.
