I got word about this quite late in the game and am trying to get out the word as quickly as possible. A bill to allow same-day voter registration came to the Assembly Appropriations Committee this week. While I and others were focusing on saving AB 52 on health insurance premiums in the Senate Appropriations Committee -- this bill got clobbered instead.
Same Day Registration (SB 641) is in trouble in the State Assembly. Your help is needed to save this bill.
Please call the office of Speaker John Perez and ask him to give SB 641 a full floor vote.
Please call Assembly Speaker John Pérez right now at (916) 319-2046 and ask for his support to reverse the Appropriations Committee's decision and give SB 641 a full floor vote.
Same day registration will increase voter turnout of
- Younger voters
- People who have moved
- Minorities
States with similar procedures have increased voter turnout 10 to 12 percent.
Same Day Registration made it through the Senate, but now we need an Assembly vote.
Let Speaker Pérez know that you support increasing voter participation, accessibility, and security.
Call Speaker Pérez at (916) 319-2046 today to urge him to reverse the Appropriations Committee's decision and allow the full Assembly to vote on this important legislation.
Common Cause offers a short phone script and asks to be kept informed as to how your call went.
Please call Speaker John Pérez at (916) 319-2046. It’s do-or-die time for this bill, so please make your call as soon as possible.
Here is a short phone script that you can use, or just speak using your own words.
My name is ___ and I’m a voter from ____. I am calling to support SB 641 – the Same Day Registration bill. I urge Speaker Pérez to reverse the Appropriations Committee's decision and move this bill to the Assembly floor so that every Assemblymember can vote on this bill.
SB 641 would allow eligible citizens to be able to register and vote on Election Day and in the last two weeks leading up to Election Day. SB 641 would increase California’s voter turnout significantly. Speaker Pérez needs to call for a floor vote on this bill before the legislative session is over. California should be a leader in advancing voter registration and participation.
Thanks! Be sure to let us know how your call went below.
For someone like me, whose political goals for my area means getting renters and the homeless out to vote -- which is the main problem I find in poorer areas -- this reform is absolutely critical. It is amazing and repugnant than any Democrat opposed it. The decision will be made soon. Weigh in.
When I called just now, it was even easier than the script suggested. "I'm calling about SB 641." "Name, city, for or against?" (Answered.) "How are the calls coming?" "A lot of them, about 99.9% in favor of the bill."
We need to make Speaker Pérez's ability to override the Appropriations Committee easier by letting them log massive and relentless support. When he overrides the decision of a committee like this, he needs to be able to blame it on massive public pressure -- from us. We should be happy to take that blame.
4:47 PM PT: OK, the time you can call has been extended until 5:00 p.m.!
Actually, I'm just messing with you. Call for as long as you can still leave messages. It can't hurt. I'd leave your first name, city, and your position in support of the bill.
