Yes, yes, I know the 7th district of Virginia is considered a solid Republican district. Yes he has won the last four elections with big, and I mean BIG margins. So, it won’t be easy and probably won’t happen with the 2012 election.
That is no reason not to begin the process of removing Eric Cantor from the political map of the United States. This man represents everything that is awful in the Republican Party. There is no better example of the hurtful and downright un-American politics being practiced by today’s Republican Party.
If you look at the statistics of Virginia’s 7th district - while Cantor wins big, his margins have been going down. Looking at 2010 Cantor won with 59% to Waugh’s 34%; 7% went to the Green candidate. If it sounds like a lot of work to beat this man, you’re right. But I believe it is doable.
Cantor received 138,209 votes and spent $5,163,290 campaigning/buying these votes - $37.36 per vote. Waugh received 79,616 votes, but spent just $148,201 - $1.86 per vote. A real bargain. What do you think would happen if $5,000,000 dollars were spent in the 7th district by Democrats? A virtual carpet bombing of ads pointing out Cantor’s heartless beliefs. His war on the rights of women. His self-serving politics. The many bills he authored/sponsored that just coincidentally happen to help out his big business donors.
Maybe he doesn’t lose in 2012. But he will lose in the end.
Some interesting facts to work with are the top contributing groups to each candidate.
Cantor
Securities/investment $452,950
Real Estate $365,047
Insurance $284,500
Retired $218,235
Health Professionals $214,950
Waugh
Democrats $12,298
Business Services $6,530
Retired $6,500
Education $4,800
Real Estate $2,246
Cantor is bought and paid for by big business. Democrats and Liberals can make a real difference here. The Republicans are fond of saying that donated money is just free speech. I say “Let’s give the next Democratic candidate for the 7th district of Virginia a truckload of “free speech”.
To start, we need to contact the DNC and make it clear we want a fight in Cantor’s backyard. Let’s bring it directly to him. He hasn’t had to really fight for this seat in the last 4 elections.
That has to end now.
