Oy vey. As my grandmothers would have said.
So, the President tried to preempt the Republican ignorance festival taking place out in Simi Valley next week by speaking to Congress at the same time.
John Boenher cried. Jim DeMint threatened some bullshit. The White House decided to do the speech the next day, Thursday, September 8th.
Result- A large portion of DailyKos suffers head explosion. Because, this mean, the President has once again given to the GOP. One would think that with this decision, Medicare was eliminated, Social Security sold off, and the end of the world is near.
Just maybe, a little thought and one would realize this isn't such a bad thing.
Follow me....
If the President spoke at the same time of the debate, there is no doubt that more people would watch the President. The debate is only on MSNBC and I assume C-Span. One can be sure that the GOP lunatic lineup would go nuts about Obama trying to steal their thunder that evening.
Then there is the idea the debate should be moved to Thursday. Seems to make sense, one does not tell the President to change his schedule, you change yours. And this is at the heart of those screaming he caved yet again.
I say no. He is in the better position.
If he spoke on Wednesday, every single answer the GOP loons would give Thursday night would drag out something the President- (or for that matter, didn't say) the night before. They would twist and alter and mutilate every word he says to Congress into something it wasn't...and most important, it would be those words that people would remember because they would be the last ones heard.
So now, the tables are turned.
Romney says he is going to have a jobs plan early next week. At the debate, the nutjob nine (there are nine of them, right?) will foam and lather like rabid dogs with all the same bullshit proposals of tax cuts for billionaires and ending every program.
Then the next night, with tv all to himself (except for the Packers game), Obama gets to rebut the GOP candidates. Of course, he actually needs to do it, but regardless, I think this is a good decision.
A lot of us bitch about the right wing's knee jerk reactions to things- like the idea of raising taxes. Well, I'm sorry to say, knee jerk reactions are limited to the right. It happens here every time the President doesn't follow the exact script many people have here in their head.
Before going off and screaming that he caved or some other bullshit, try to think some of the decisions the President makes through a bit...especially the small ones like this.
