I came for the trailer.
I stayed for the movie, even with a whole lot of "meh" reviews.
What good movies have you seen recently?
More below the flip.
As I perused the scattered reviews of Apollo 18 before I went to the theater to see it, my expectations were significantly downgraded. How could a movie about a time in my life that I remember so well, and events that stick with me like they happened yesterday, get such lukewarm reviews? Anyway, I'm glad I didn't let the reviews scare me off.
Apollo 18 has been characterized as "Blair Witch Project" in space. I don't concur. From the first frame of Blair Witch, I though that particular movie was hokey. This was different.
Maybe it's just because I'm a child of the Apollo age, but I thought the way the movie was presented from a cinematography perspective was excellent (it worked very well with the film's premise and period). If you're expecting cutting edge CGI, don't bother. But if you remember the grainy footage from various moon landings, and can relate to the cold war, then maybe there's something in this movie that you'll enjoy, as did I.
I thought the story line was adequate and suspenseful - again, if you're rating the movie on blown-to-bits-bodies-per-second, you'll be disappointed. If you're willing to let the story unfold, you'll be satisfied with your time in the theater.
I don't do spoilers, so I won't tell you how the movie ends. If you're that interested, look it up. Suffice it to say that the acting was more than adequate. The three principal actors did a bang up job with relatively mediocre material, and conveyed the sense of moon flights and claustrophobic isolation almost perfectly.
