The Daily Bucket is a place to catch your casual observations of the natural world and turn them into a valuable resource. Whether it's the first flowers of spring or that odd bug in your basement, don't be afraid to toss your thoughts into the bucket. Check here for a more complete description.

Citrus
I think I have already noted that our orange and lemon are productive pretty much year round, but not so our pear and apple.
Pears
The pears ripen over a period of weeks and begin to fall and get knocked off by critters and humans even before they are fully ripe. Our response is to pick them when they are almost ready to fall and to place them one layer deep in shallow cardboard boxes covered with newspaper. When enough are fully ripe to start canning, we do so. it is awkward to try to measure the seasons by the ripening and our picking, because it is less than definitive, but the canning is a firm date and marks a specific point in the year for us. So, though we really started Saturday, I'll go with today:
9/5/11 Canning peaches. (There are still some on the tree, and the last harvest is another day of note normally, but we might not be here when it falls, so this will not be a normal year in that respect)
Apples (Granny Smith)
These are fully ripe and starting to fall, but we don't have time to harvest and process them right now, so we agreed to postpone that until early October, if any are still left on the tree by then. All the same:
9/5/11 - Apples are ripe enough to start picking and processing, but action deferred
Other
The hummingbird feeder that I filled at roughly 11:45 yesterday is already down about 1&1/4 to 1&1/2 inches.
