Since I know a local poster that is unfamiliar with how to place an image into their diaries and am having that poster come over today to work on learning how to do so I thought I would share the effort.
We will use the comments section of this diary to insert images onto Kos. I understand that some of the information therein will soon be dated as Kos will be changing the protocols for image inclusion. That is okay this is still a good skill to learn. I have no special training and make no promises my skills are up to all challenges you may face in inserting photos but the collective wisdom here should be able to find help for every question. My practice has been my interest in the Pootie diaries as I enjoy Pooties very much. There users such as Triciawyse aka: Da Pootie Queen will guide you through posting photos to your hearts content.
So without further ado choose a photo and put it on the web.
From FAQ:
Pictures and images
Another common thing to do is put an image into a diary or comment. Before you do this, please stop and think for a moment. Pictures require much more in the way of network resources than text. Big pictures make life difficult for people without fast net connections. Keep your pictures small, and only use them when it really adds something to the point you want to make. That said, there are three steps that need to be followed to insert a picture into a diary or comment:
Putting the image on the web
The first step is to put the image on an approved Web image hosting provider. This is required: you are not allowed to directly link to images from news media, personal sites, or others. This requirement prevents those sites from suffering large bandwidth fees if not being taken offline due to the enormous traffic Daily Kos can cause for them.
The approved image hosting services are currently:
http://www.photobucket.com
http://www.imageshack.us
http://flickr.com
http://smugmug.com
http://webshots.com
http://picturetrail.com
http://mac.com
http://allyoucanupload.com
You do not have to set up an account in these sites to find and use photos. But if you wish to upload your own photos to share on Kos you must set up an account.
Using flickr I will search and insert a photo walking through the process.
First I will go to the site and in the upper right hand corner is a search box.
I will enter lol cats into the search box.
I will receive a page with multiple images I will select one by clicking on it.
That image will load in its own page with a share button over the image near the center.
I will click there.
Doing so will present a box with hypertext denoting
grab the HTML/BBC code
, I will click there.
I will then be presented with a sub box starting with < a href and proceeding with varying length of text.
Clicking once on the text turns it copy blue.
Right clicking and choosing copy grabs that code.
Next choose the placement of the copied HTML such as here:
Please note some photos can not be shared because the person putting the photos on the site do not want you to copy them. In those cases you will not see the grab the HTML hyperlink in the share sub box.
The important html code that goes with most photos is (delete spaces to ensure use of the bolded text leaving one space between img and src)< img src = " photo html " / >. Please note some of the hosting sites such as flickr do not require this additional code to insert photos. That it why it is important to review your submission prior to posting to see that both the photo has embedded and that there is no extraneous code.
Daily Kos has a group at the bottom of the front page titled Daily Kos Photo Cooperative
This is a group based on Smugmug one of the approved photo hosting sites.
Insert a photo from smugmug you need to do the following:
First I will go to the site and in the upper right hand corner is a search box.
I will enter lol cats into the search box.
This will result in a page with image collections, choose a collection.
That will go to a page with multiple photos and sometimes multiple pages of that collection.
Click on your chosen photo.
When you do so the photo will become the feature photo above that will be a share button.
Click the share button and select to get a link.
It will go to a page listing various sizes with a copy button to denote your selection.
Choose your size, small usually works on Kos, and click the copy button.
Select the placement of the copied text and insert it. Use the HTML code for photos above to bracket this resulting code.
Please ask questions in the comments as you are not the only one wanting to know this.
4:51 PM PT: By request for visual learners here is a video on how to use flicker to obtain a photo. Please note that the portion of the video regarding this post starts at 4:20. Plenty of good stuff before then in the video so it is worth the watch.
