By which I mean: My sister doesn't pay much attention to politics because she's busy, you know, living her life, working more hours than she ever has in her life to keep ahead of the bills, and yet she is a remarkably accurate bellweather of how basic, good middle class folks respond to events.
She is a nurse who has worked in hospital intensive care units, private practice, and as a teacher.
She is STOKED by this. I clued her in Thursday and at that point she hadn't heard a thing about OWS. Today when I emailed her I discovered she's been keeping the livestream on as a witness and is absolutely behind this movement.
She teaches nursing students at a community college and is heartbroken at the struggles her students are going through, as you can see below. She has seen teaching grants canceled and faculty let go.
If they've got my sis, they have America.
Count on it.
Today I sent her this link to the Van Jones video and acknowledged that she's not a political junkie like me:
Her reply:
Yes, I'm not a political junkie - but this has been eating at me for some time. I see students struggling to stay in school - some of them have to go over to our campus "food locker" to get dinner for the night. I feel so terrible for the people who have lost their jobs, can't find a job, lost their homes (one on our street), can't afford medical insurance, living on the edge. I've felt that this is getting so chronic, pervasive. This movement is just that....MOVEMENT. Thank god. I'm not very politically knowledgeable - you help me with that - but I want to be involved in this. Occupy Sacramento is happening on Oct 15
