I am so proud (especially of Jesse LaGreca) as I watch the Occupy Wall Street movement grow in New York City and around the country; however, I feel like I am missing something. What is the goal of the movement; besides the fact that "I'm mad as hell and not going to take it any more?"
I understand that the overall goal is balancing the economic injustice in the country. But what are the specific goals? Is it to change the tax code? Stop the wars? Pass the jobs bill? Be the liberal answer to the tea baggers? Try to start criminal investigations of the big banks and Wall Street? Change the spending priorities in the country to spend less on defense and more on education? To oppose the Citizens United decision? To oppose the voter suppression that is going on? I totally agree with all of the above, but am somewhat confused by what is trying to be accomplished right now?
All of the above and more can be accomplished in time if we dramatically change Congress and state legislatures. If we change the Supreme Court. Is that the goal? To turn it into a political movement going into the 2012 elections. Who would it support?
To me, this movement should appeal to the mother and father who each have to work two or more jobs to send their kids to college; or to pay for their monthly health care insurance. It should appeal to young people who just graduated from college. They worked hard, played by the rules and now there are no jobs. It should appeal to seniors who are concerned about Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid. If this movement can reach those people and connect with them; it will be much more successful than the tea party and hopefully it will translate into electing many more elected officials like Bernie Sanders and Allan Grayson. It would be great to see them dominating Congress like the tea party nuts are trying to do now.
Please someone tell me if I understand this properly. Thanks.
