It has happened. Carbon emissions will be taxed in Australia. That is, ... the carbon tax bill has been passed by the Australian House of Representatives.
Yes, it still has to go through the Senate, but that is not considered to be hazardous (a 3/5ths majority not being required for any bloody thing).

The Leader of the Opposition, Tony Abbott, aka 'The Mad Monk', has taken a blood oath to overturn the legislation when he can. Probably, once it's going, he cannot. Still, the road to environmental sanity must - apparently - be long and bloody.
