Mitt Romney tripped all over himself on what he "thinks" is question #2 in Ohio. Imagine what would happen if he were asked about proposition 26 in Mississippi?
Proposition 26 would define personhood as the very instant a sperm wiggles its way into an egg, rendering Roe v. Wade moot. Passage of this constitutional amendment would make the use of common forms of birth control such as IUD or the morning after pill illegal. It would mean that emergency contraception would not be available to, say, a 13 year old raped by a father, uncle, or brother. Abortion in such a case would be murder.
What a conundrum this question would present for Mitt Romney. Would he be a chicken, or an advocate for the fertilized egg? It is the perfect catch 22: Oppose the law and risk losing the nomination, support it and risk losing the general election.
Other candidates would be similarly boxed in, but somewhat less confounded by the question. Herman Cain would maintain that it is the woman's (or child's) choice whether or not to commit murder. Perry would stammer out the words "I always choose life", and that would be the beginning, middle, and end of his thoughtful analysis. Rick Santorum would hold up a jar with a fetus in it, and Michele Bachmann would simply say "a person is a person no matter how small".
Regardless, this question is begging to be asked. Will anyone go there?
