Following up on the interview they did with Chris Hedges, OccupyTVNY has posted a wonderful interview with Harry Belafonte.
I don't have a transcript but here are some of the highlights of the interview:
The Press
If you’re looking for the media to be your ally it’s a very naïve thing for you to be thinking. It’s not your ally. Most of the media is owned by those who control the very things that oppress us, and they speak for that, and they have a loyalty to that kind of class structure and that kind of class definition.
Unions
I think the labor unions view what’s going with this Occupy Wall Street movement as an opportunity for them, after many decades, to get back on track, to become a part of what it was when they were conceived.
Non-Violence
Non-violence does not represent a passive spirit, it represents a higher order of civilized behavior, and if you can confront the state and bring it to its’ knees non-violently it is safe to suggest that perhaps the state will never rise again.
Mr. Belafonte continues to be one of the most eloquent voices in support of social and economic reform. He discusses the protest itself, unions, the press, and other topics affecting the 99%.
He appeared on The Colbert Report back in mid October and spoke in support of the OWS movement at that time. It's great to see him continuing to speak out in support of the protestors.
