Not all Christians are idiots. Many of them are working hard for social justice and peace. Folks like Michele Bachmann and her closeted husband, or Rick Perry or the loathsome Newt Gingrich give us a bad name. People tend, especially on the Left, to equate those folks with Christianity. It couldn't be further from the truth.
Follow me over the fold for a little more...
There are many of us here, on Daily Kos, who identify as Christians (and some, like me, who are Christians who also celebrate their Jewish heritage). Many of us are liberals, progressives, and in my case, even real honest-to-G_D socialists. We are not "fundamentalists" but some are Evangelicals and others, like me, are what is called "Mainstream Christians"--Episcopalians, Roman Catholics, Presbyterians, Methodists, etc, and other liberal believers here are Jewish or Muslim, Buddhists or Jainists or Seihks or Hindu or any number of ancient indigenous religious adherents or even Pagan or Wiccan. There are lots of us who practice a form of spirituality and liberal politics. Many of us are appalled by the perversion of the Gospels or other religious texts sold to us by people who really worship Ayn Rand and greed.
Christianity, as a spiritual discipline, is largely misunderstood and defined by people who have a particular world-view which is totally out of line with the Gospels. It makes great grist for the mill. It's easy to mock. It's also easy to paint all Christians with a broad brush. It's easy to condemn all of us on the basis of the hypocrisy of the few.
I know some Kossacks are really hostile towards religion of any kind, and I respect that view. Painting all people of faith with that broad brush, however, is unnecessary. It's also hurtful, and does not forward the discussion. The hypocrites? Nail 'em. The rest of us, however, are on the right side of history here.
