Howard Tate was a great American soul singer with an amazing voice, who didn't get the recognition he deserved. He died Dec 2 of cancer at the age of 72. His songs were covered by Janis Joplin and Ry Cooder, among others. He had some success in the 1960s but then faded into obscurity, becoming addicted to crack in the 1980s and being homeless for a time as well. He eventually turned himself around, and in the 1990s became a preacher and drug counselor. His musical career was somewhat revitalized in the last decade, and Howard began recording and touring again after a come-back performance at the 2001 new Orleans Jazz Festival. Here is the title track from his greatest album, produced by Jerry Ragavoy in 1966.
