Welcome to Sunday All Day Brunch. For those of you who staggered out of bed expecting the Rose Parade and college football it is on tomorrow instead. I put out extra goodies for you to make up for the disappointment. I checked out to find out why this occurs and found this.
But the reason there won't be college football on New Year's Day this year – and why the Rose Parade and six bowl games will air instead on Monday, Jan. 2 – may have more to do with horses in Pasadena on Sunday, Jan. 1, 1893.That was when the Tournament of Roses, which staged the first Rose Parade in 1890, imposed a "never on Sunday" rule in fear that the procession would spook horses tethered outside local churches and disrupt worship services with bedeviling gallops.
I am starting the New Year with a combination of excitement and dread. I no longer have any health insurance and I’m not eligible for Medicare until March of next year. I live on Social Security and after paying the rent and everything else I have $250.00 left for food, gas, medicine, and other expenses. Not likely to find any health insurance that I can afford. I have C.O.P.D. so this is a concern to me. I can’t apply for disability until I find where my health records went. My Doctor retired and no one seems to know where his patient records are.
I am excited about the artwork. I am trying to get the business started with the hopes of being able to supplement my Social Security. I have a couple of places here where I can show my work. I also hope to join the festival circuit and sell the art and jewelry.
The cats are doing well but Merlin is going on 14 so I am keeping a good eye on him. So far he seems in good health. Pixie is a little squirt so I’m not concerned about her. It is a blessing to have them around. They definitely keep things interesting. I also get unconditional love from them and that is very important.
I don’t bother with New Year’s Resolutions. What I do is look ahead and see what I will be doing. In 2012 I will be:
· Doing a lot of writing for Street Prophets and Daily Kos. I will continue with the Thursday Coffee Hour, Sunday All Day Brunch, Breaking Bread food diaries which I usually do on Monday, and the Care Givers diaries that I try to post on Wednesday. With it being an election year I’ll be writing about things that affect senior citizens like myself. After all I do need to use that Lifetime subscription that I was given by my Secret Santa.
· I’ll be doing lots of art. As I push to make this my new career I want to offer a whole range of pictures for people to choose from.
· I’ll be formatting and trying to sell my first cookbook. I have started a second cookbook so cooking will be an on-going affair.
· I’ll be designing and making lots of jewelry. I find that it helps with the arthritis in my hands working with the jewelry supplies.
· I’ll be working on my second fantasy series. I have the first ready to go to try and find a publisher. I illustrate my own books so I’m hoping that I can use that as a selling point.
· I’ll go back up to Indiana and work to get the house sold and get my brother down here where he belongs.
· I’ll continue being a support to my niece and her children. She is more of a daughter to me then a niece and her kids are starting to call my Grandma, which is fine with me.
So my day will probably be on the computer doing art and writing. How are you planning to spend your day? Do you have any exciting plans for this New Year? The top picture was my final picture for 2011. It is called “Best Seat in the House.” The bottom picture is my first picture of 2012 and is called “Walking Through Wonderland.”
