I will keep this basically short. I haven't been paying much attention to politics this week due to the Houston story, but then I come on DK and there's this bimbo eruption over something called Op Hilarity.
I first thought that it was some call for violence during the OWS protests or something. But then I figured being hilarious and violent doesn't really go together, so I had to scroll around a bit to figure out what the heck everyone was all up in arms over.
Now Markos has responded to the 'outcry' on DK over his suggestion that people in open primary states exercise their right to vote -- in the primary.
One thing about Markos rebuttal -- I think that his assertion that we Progressives 'play by the rules' is a bit off.
Look. Voting in open state primaries IS PLAYING BY THE RULES. Democratics, Independents and all other parties can vote for whoever they want and that's perfectly fair and it's perfectly legal.
What's the problem with that?
My only issue is how Markos is couching this now in the meme of Democrats not getting anywhere by playing by the rules.
Now I do a problem with that. The issue is not whether we Dems and Progressive are playing by the rules or not. The issue is whether we Dems and Progressives take advantage of existing rules -- or the lack thereof -- in order to boost our cause.
We can't change the rules if we aren't at the table to make the rules. Now Markos is right about that. Being 'principled' without 'being practical' will only get you so far.
The genesis of most of the pie wars around here centers around this very issue.
People can do what they want on primary day and even on election day. But at the end of the day, you get what you pay for.
And what you don't.
