This could catch on and become the hippest swear word of 2012 thanks to Romney’s very kind encouragement (*snark*).
There is also this: Go Deport Yourself!
And how about a spin-off concept: Do-It-Yourself Deportation
Finally, we have a Patriots for Self-Deportation, a new group that recently launched a web site urging Americans to investigate their family trees for illegal immigrants and “anchor babies” and then, if they find anything suspicious, to do the right thing and self-deport.
As William Finnegan explains in a recent article
“The site is now filling up with anguished testimonials from conscience-stricken young white people heading off to Italy and Poland to atone for their ancestors’ misdeeds. …”
The aim of recent anti-immigration laws is to make life so difficult for illegal immigrants that they will pack their bags and leave. And that is precisely what Romney meant. His chief adviser on immigration issues, Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach, was the draft author of both the Arizona and the Alabama laws.
What about the Latino vote?
That’s one question political pundits throw around: what about the Latino Vote?
Hispanics are approximately 15% of the US population according to census data, but this number includes illegal immigrants and legal citizens. An msnbc article from March 2011looked at trends involving Latino voters. In Nevada, for example, Latinos were about 11 % of registered voters in 2008. In Colorado, Latinos comprised 9 % of registered voters.
If the Latino vote can in fact decide the 2012 presidential elections as many say, then why are GOP candidates adopting the radical tea-party rhetoric towards illegal immigrants?
They probably think: Uh, well, the Latinos who participate in elections are citizens of the USA; they won’t be affected by the anti-immigration laws or care about them. What is wrong with this thinking?
I’m a “brown” skinned citizen, and I know I would be stopped by an Arizona officer asking me for my papers. Moreover, the radical anti-immigrant initiatives in Arizona and Alabama were propelled by the tea-party fraction in the GOP, you know, these people:
But that is not all.
The Germans are coming!
No, they are not.
But if they were, the tea-party or the GOPers wouldn’t be scared by the white, tall , blond, blue-eyed German immigrants, if they were to come to America in mass and settle down in their towns , seeking to flee the Greek crisis.
No. That electric fence Herman Cain wanted to build, it was for the Latino immigrants. It’s the Latinos they don’t want to see down their streets or anywhere for that matter.
And that sentiment affects all Latinos, illegal or not, those who don’t vote and those who do. With some exceptions, we Latinos are very accepting of other Latinos. We have Latino friends; we often speak Spanish with other Latinos. We enjoy our cultural activities; our music, our dances (who doesn’t enjoy shaking it to a salsa song or to the Hip Hop and reggaeton fusions?) And our food. We all know Tex-Mex means Mexican dishes with a lot of cheddar cheese. Foodie Americans love the Argentinian and Brazilian steakhouses and the Japanese-Peruvian fusions that delight any palette. I hate to digress, but that’s just it right there. Most of us recognize the fusion taking place; most Americans are open to trying new dishes, learning new dances and even making inter-racial babies. We enjoy Cinco de Mayo as much as the Fourth of July celebration. Latinos enjoy professional American sports as much as we love the World Cup. But the illegals and legals alike, we don’t look forward to having police profile us because our skin is brown or we happen to have a conversation in Spanish.
But why are the Germans not coming?
According to the Tea-party GOPers, Europe’s big socialist governments are bringing down Europe. But the truth of the matter is that while Germans, the French, and Italians complain about their respective government’s policies, (which is a common pastime of almost everyone who lives in a democratic society) they are quite content with the opportunities, services and benefits they get from their big governments.
In contrast, many Latin-American countries have what I would call “very small governments” (and I thought “big is better”), these are idyllic places for the Tea-party supporters to immigrate to (Yeah, why don’t YOU Mitt and the rest of the Tea Party Bigots self-deport?), where a few wealthy people can make a lot of money, where Darwin rules and only the fittest survive; the rest of the people are free to drop dead, because they are a bunch of losers. These Latin American countries lack regulations, oversight, laws and well funded programs that ensure that everyone gets a fair chance at a good education, a good career, that everyone has access to good healthcare and a good, well paid job. Western European government provide these services and benefits for their citizens. Latin America lacks them and that explains why, it’s the Latinos who come to the USA, and not the Germans.
Small governments only breed misery and force their people to leave everything behind for a chance at a better future elsewhere, for themselves and their families.
And finally, do we really need those Mexican, Guatemalan tomato pickers?
Alabama farmers can tell you, yes, they do. And that is what Mc Donalds and Burger King would say too (they happen to provide the labor for those sliced tomatoes in their burgers). And fancy restaurants serve them too. Just face it: Americans just don’t want those under-the-scorching-sun, long-hours, low-paying jobs.
