One of the most interesting and peculiar characters of the Dracula saga is the pitiful and repulsive Renfield, held in thrall by Dracula and compelled to eat insects, spiders, and birds in a deluded effort to mirror his Master by "absorbing more life."
Upon reflection, Renfield's lot in life is a perfect metaphor for politics, especially Republican politics, in the age of Citizen's United. Let me show you....
Renfield, from Wikipedia:
He is an inmate at the lunatic asylum overseen by Dr. John Seward. He suffers from delusions which compel him to eat living creatures in the hope of obtaining their life-force for himself. He starts by consuming flies, then develops a scheme of feeding the flies to spiders, and the spiders to birds, in order to accumulate more and more life. When denied a cat to accommodate the birds, he eats the birds himself. He also changes his ideas to accommodate Mina Harker by quickly eating all flies and stating that it was an old habit. Doctor John Seward diagnoses him as a "zoophagous maniac".
During the course of the novel, he is revealed to be under the influence of Count Dracula. The vampire, whose abilities include control over animals such as rats, bats and spiders, comes to Renfield with an offer: if Renfield worships him, he will provide Renfield with an endless supply of food.
The mapping of concepts almost writes itself doesn't it?
X is an inmate at the lunatic asylum overseen by Reince Priebus. He suffers from supply-side delusions which compel him to consume the lives of the poor and middle class in hopes of becoming one of the 1%. He hatches many schemes which are intended to lead to a conservative paradise, in spite of the repeated failure of such schemes.
During the course of the campaign, he is revealed to be under the influence of the 1%, who exert enormous unchecked influence over the economy and through that influence the lives of everyone in it.
The billionaires come to X with an offer: an infinite amount of money toward winning office, as permitted by the Citizens United decision, in return for worshiping the interests of the 1% at the expense of everyone else.
This is particularly apt in the case of a couple of the candidates like Newt who are clearly still in the race because of financial underwriting by single wealthy donors.
The current Republican field are very plainly our modern political Renfields.
