This is not about a cashier, but a customer I met in line waiting for the cashier. Was in line at the local Safeway and overheard the guy in front of me engaging in conversation with the checker. "I have been coming to this store since just after it first opened (1937). " I said "wow, I was't even born till 1942". So, out in the parking lot the guy sees me and comes over to chat. He says "yea, i'm a 39 model, your a 42 model". I figure we have some things in common (a couple of old farts). Then, he starts spewing Hate about the President; " trashing our second amendment rights, he just waiting for the second term to take away our guns". He is going on and on, I am thinking WTF, who is this wingnut. Frankly, I did not know what to say to this guy. Finally, as he is continuing his tirade, I just said "well, I gotta be going". His last words were another "dog whistle"; "keep your powder dry". I learned a long time ago to "Don't argue with Fools". The whole thing still bothers me, but I know there was nothing I could say that would change this persons opinion in any way. In January 2011, I had to travel to Utah for the funeral of my Mom (she made it to 90); and had to overnight at a Holiday Inn in Reno (both coming and going). In the room, on the TV, the only Cable News offered was FOX news and that CNN offshoot. No MSNBC, no CNN, nothing. I realized, the local populace in Nevada is only hearing FOX. This is really scary, somehow, there is no choice as to where you get your News from. I don't know if that was just the Holiday Inn, or if that is true for all of Nevada.
So, to "I told off a cashier who was trashing the President", I say GOOD FOR YOU we need to confront the ignorance when we can. It is not always possible to do so. How do we confront the ignorance when they are a captive audience? As in having no other viable source of news.
I Apologize if this is kind of rambling or disconnected; it is just my stream of consciousness.
