According to the just released Quinnipiac poll, the President leads Romney 50-42, double his 4 point margin one month ago in this poll. He leads Santorum 49-40 and the other two by double digits.
Among women, the President leads Romney 52-39, but he also leads among men, 48-45.
The poll also checked the impact of putting Republican Governor Bob McDonnell on the ticket as the running mate. The impact was marginal, with the President winning 50-43.
While Obama carried Virginia by 7 points 4 years ago, the last time before that a Democrat carried the Old Dominion was in the landslide of 1964 - even Southerner Jimmy Carter could not carry Virginia. If this kind of margin is sustained, it is hard to see where Romney or any Republican could offset the loss of Virginia's 13 electoral votes unless he could peel away either Pennsylvania, New Jersey, or Ohio (Michigan now being clearly out of reach).
I suspect the debate on contraception/birth control has cut here. Expect an equally deep impact from the Ryan budget redux, given the large number of people whose employment depends upon the federal government, either directly or indirectly.
