I wanted to share a portion of the letter that our school superintendent, Alberto Carvalho, wrote to the Miami Herald today regarding Trayvon Martin. You can read all of it on the Herald's website here.
As superintendent of Miami-Dade County Public Schools, a father and an American, I’m heartbroken by the senseless death of one of my students, a member of this community, Trayvon Martin. ...
I attend countless memorials of young people, whose lives have been cut short for many reasons, and it’s always heartbreaking, but the circumstances surrounding Trayvon’s death and the inaction of law enforcement officials immediately and for weeks following his killing cut to the very core of our humanity. The apparent failure of authorities to properly investigate this tragedy is inexcusable. ...
A young life has been lost, and we don’t know why. Collectively we grieve for Trayvon and share in his family’s sorrow.
Alberto M. Carvalho, superintendent,
Miami-Dade Public Schools, Miami
Given the current focus by some on his school record, seeing this statement (and you really should read the whole letter) from our county Superintendent - who has access to all of Trayvon's academic and conduct record - really goes to show how some are twisting this entire situation to lay all the blame on the Trayvon. The school district wants justice for Trayvon; hopefully his family will see justice soon.
