Last month, my good friend, Richard, passed away. He was a champion of wildlife, and an activist to save wildlife habitat.
Yesterday, we planted a Dogwood tree in his honor (we thought) We chose the Dogwood because in the fall, it bears fruit that birds and small animals relish.
We also like the legend of the blossoms, even though we are not Christian.

I knew that Richard would be happy.
Then today, I read the brochure that came with the tree.
This "Celestial White Flowering Dogwood" is an engineered hybrid.
it will not bear fruit in the fall. The leaves will not have the dogwood look.
The petals are dead white, and uninteresting.
You have to read well into fine print to find this out. They never use the word "engineered."
Rutgers U. is proud as punch that it produced its synthetic product.
Why should they inform the consumer that their tree is not really the beautiful, legendary Dogwood, but a fake moneymaker, that like plastic, will hold up much better than the original.

My friend, Richard would not be happy being "honored" by a marketing scam.
