I was looking for a written summary of all the various legislation from around the country that define the "War on Women." Feel free to augment this list in the comment section. I'll update the diary as necessary.
Republicans at the state, federal and presidential-campaign level have pushed in recent months for restricting contraception; cutting off Planned Parenthood; state-mandated, medically unnecessary transvaginal ultrasounds; forcing physicians to lie to patients about abortion and breast cancer; abortion taxes; abortion waiting periods; forcing women to tell their employers why they want birth control, and going after prenatal care. There is nothing fictional about it. Proof:
Governor Brown (R – Wisconsin) – Repealed state law requiring equal pay for equal work. “You could argue that money is more important for men.”
Governor Brownback (R- Kansas) – Signed into law some of the most extreme anti-abortion laws in the country. Doctor is forced to read a script (written by state legislators) saying things that are medically inaccurate like “abortion is linked to breast cancer.”
Governor McDonnell (R-Virginia) – Signed into law mandatory trans-vaginal ultrasound procedure (requiring insertion into the body). Forces women to look at the image, and forces doctors to print the image and include in the woman’s medical records. The woman is forced to pay for the procedure and the indignity.
Governor Corbett (R – Pennsylvania) – Wants to sign into law mandatory ultrasounds for women (most will be trans-vaginal), but allows them to avert their eyes from the monitor so they don’t have to see the fetus.
Governor Brewer (R - Arizona) is considering signing (or already has) a bill that will prohibit medical malpractice lawsuits against doctors who withhold information from a woman that could cause her to have an abortion. Legally allowing a doctor to lie.
The Arizona house (R – majority) passed a bill to permit employers to ask their employees for proof of medical prescription if they seek contraceptives for non-reproductive purposes. This makes it mandatory to tell your boss if you’re having sex but don’t want to get pregnant.
Under consideration in Republican lead states:
Mississippi – Criminalizes abortion as murder
Violence Against Woman act is for the first time is seeing opposition (national)
Texas – blocking Planned Parenthood from receiving any state money (97% of Planned Parenthood activities are health care related)
Kansas – Topeka, legal to beat your wife
Mitt Romney’s line about women losing more jobs under Obama is true. Except that the majority of men who lost their jobs were under Bush prior to Obama taking office. Construction, Banking, etc. It takes time for the governments around the country to trim headcount. Since Obama has been in office, governments (Federal, State, and Local) around the country have gotten much smaller. Mostly women have lost their jobs. Making Romney’s statement true but misleading. Under the Obama presidency, the number of people unemployed has dropped dramatically. And for the past 22 months, every month, more people found work than lost it.
