With Mitt Romney recently telling a group gathered for a fundraiser that he will be lucky to get 20 percent of the Hispanic vote, RNC Chairman Reince Priebus is reaching out to Latino voters with lip service and Nevada State Senator Ruben Kihuen has fired back at the Chairman and the Republican Party with their disingenuous words.
Ruben Kihuen told Reince Priebus “in your dreams”, both a reference to the fact that Romney has no chance with Hispanic voters because of the anti-immigration policies he supports and also a reference to the DREAM Act which Romney does not support, saying that he would veto the DREAM Act if as President it made it to his desk.
The DREAM Act would allow Hispanics who attend at least two years of College or serve two years in the US Military a fast track to US citizenship, Romney has said that he would not support those who attend college, but he would support those who serve in the Military, but he has also said that he would not any part of the DREAM Act. It all depends on which way the wind is blowing on any given day with Romney.
State Senator Ruben Kihuen’s statement he said:
“Given Mitt Romney's support for Wall Street millionaires paying a lower tax rate than middle-class workers like teachers and nurses as well as his pledge to veto the DREAM Act, it’s no wonder the RNC has finally realized they have a problem with Hispanic voters and have pushed the panic button. However, no amount of conference calls or token, last-minute outreach efforts will change the fact that Mitt Romney is wrong for Latino families.
“On behalf of Nevada’s Hispanic community, my message to RNC Chairman Reince Priebus is this: in your dreams. When Nevada’s Latino community goes to the polls this November, they will have a clear choice between President Obama’s commitment to creating jobs and passing comprehensive immigration reform and the DREAM Act, and a Republican like Mitt Romney who would be the most extreme Republican presidential nominee on immigration issues in modern history.”
During the bitter Primary and caucus fights with hardline right wingers like Santorum, Bachmann and Cain, Romney has looked for every opening he could find to get to the right of his extremist opponents. And now that no real competition is left standing in his way of becoming the Republican nominee, Romney is already trying to distance himself from what he said over the last few months. Fortunately for voters Romney can run, but he can’t hide from his own words because they are all on video.
State Senator Ruben Kihuen is a strong leader and a strong voice in Nevada’s Hispanic community where approximately 20 percent of the Hispanics in Nevada are registered voters. And when Kihuen tells the RNC Chairman, “in your dreams”, you can pretty much take that to the bank.
Romney- I would veto the DREAM Act
