Best quote from the video:
"Check this out, I'm the president of the United States. (cheering) We just paid our student loans off 8 years ago. That wasn't that long ago."
I just saw this clip posted on ThinkProgress. I don't know where he was, or to whom he was speaking. I do know that it appears that he intentionally dropped the "Silver Spoon" reference. I find that hysterical. Now that Romney's supporters have complained so bitterly about the remark, and now that Steve Doocy has made his stupidity on the issue known, they probably don't realize that every time Obama refers to the wealthy, the people listening are immediately going to think about Romney.
See how that works? Romney's camp complains about non-existent statement that was directed at no particular individual, even if it were true. Obama cleared of ownership of comment. Now he just says wealthy or rich, and guess what? Instant image of Mitt Romney in the voters' heads.
I give lot of my advice to my kid through stories of my own stupid, younger days. I guess that's just the way I see things.
This video of Obama shows him explaining how when he and Michelle got married, "They got poor together."
There isn't a candidate who can tell this story. There isn't a candidate other than Obama who has the even the slightest ability to communicate such a closely experienced, shared narrative.
That's powerful. It's powerful to hear the president tell you about the mountain of debt they struggled with as students.
I know that he was able to get it paid off, and I know that they are more than okay for the rest of their lives. That's not the issue. The issue is about who has the legitimate ability to understand the situation of the vast majority of Americans.
The upshot of the video is that Obama and Michelle experienced what these students are experiencing. It was a time when they got married, and "they got poor together."
It's about making college more affordable for young people.
