There you are, thousands of miles from where you were born and raised. You and thousands of others, similarly clad to blend in with the surrounding terrain. Some have made this trip before, but for many others it's their first journey to this place.
Netroots For The Troops® is raising funds to send Care Packages to our soldiers stationed overseas. We have until the end of the month to raise funds for this year's packages, which will be packed at Netroots Nation.
This week, a number of diarists will be writing in support the effort. We hope you can make a contribution for this worthwhile cause.
You never know when the order might come to move out. You've practiced, you know the drill, you move with precision. In tight formation, you head out, everyone watching out for each other.
Back at the end of a long hot day, it would be great to unwind for a bit with a nice cold beer, but the rules are different here.
The best you can do is try to grab a little shut-eye, and think about flying back to your home turf in a few months. All too soon, it will be time to get up and do it all again.
When you're that far away, it feels good to know that someone is thinking of you. A care package of useful stuff (and some treats!) is a great thing - it lets you know that your efforts are appreciated, that even total strangers care about you and support you. You know that some of them have made the same journey as you, because they know just the things you really need... and some of the things you really crave.
They know that an Army travels on its feet, and it really helps if those feet are comfortable:
And though it may travel on its feet, it's fueled by coffee. Getting a package of fresh coffee provides a nice break from industrial strength brown stuff. No one better stand in the way!
For a quick boost of energy, that tastes great as well, nothing beats peanut butter:
Toiletries help, too, on a multi-day slog. Any little thing that will help you feel a bit more like your own self is good.
Please make a donation HERE. Thank you from the entire 2012 NFTT Team.
Netroots For The Troops® is a project of Netroots for the Troops, Inc., a Virginia non-profit corporation. The organization raises money for the assembly, mailing and delivery of Care Packages to American military in war zones and to provide assistance to military families in the United States. Netroots For The Troops, Inc. is a 501(c)3 tax-exempt organization.
The NFTT diaries are a way for the Daily Kos community to support the troops in Afghanistan. We send them packages of items they find useful, but might not otherwise get through normal military processes. This is a non-political diary. While understand there are differing views on the wars and the warriors, the site gives plenty of opportunity to express those views elsewhere. We would hope that users do not engage with those attempting to hijack or disrupt these diaries but we do have ways of dealing with disrupters here in the bird blogs...
We appreciate your understanding and support. Thanks!
