On Hardball today, the guests were Tony Perkins and Barney Frank. While I know I have a leftist slant, I cannot imagine that anyone watching it thought Perkins made a single point that was not decimated by Frank and Matthews.
But what got to me was the absolute heartlessness of Perkins' positions.
Perkins actually argued that
"only heterosexual married couples should be allowed to adopt.. because there is no excess of children needing to be adopted. That is why people actually go out of the country to find available children"
When it was pointed out how many children are languishing in the foster care system, he said
"well there are special needs children but we cannot base laws on that."
My heart breaks for children in the foster care system who will never be part of a loving family. By the way the only "special needs" some of them have is the need to be loved even though they are older or non-white.
An anti-gay marriage group offered a large cash bounty for anyone who could find children of gay parents to testify that they were harmed by their parent's sexuality. I would have thought they would manage to find some bitter person, since in any group you can find an outlier (like one of Martin Luther King's nieces on civil rights issues). But they found no one.
I also cannot imagine a child in the foster care system saying they would rather stay in the system than be adopted by anyone other than a married heterosexual couple. But I also could never conceive of anyone heartless enough to turn their back on children, who need the security of being part of a legally recognized family. Yet I know that everyone who voted yes in North Caroline did just that, they just did not all know it.
