We know why the right hates celebrities: The right hates them because they dine and schmooze with Obama and give him millions!
Cross-posted at Immizen.com with pictures of the two ladies.
That would change if they could get the kind of attention Obama gets from celebrities. Evidence for that is that when they find one lame Hollywood celebrity parroting some rightwing nonsense you see Fox News all eager to get them on the program and interview them and best if two days in a row. Suddenly that one solitary celebrity becomes relevant for the right, like... Angeline Jolie’s dad. And there are some other conservative non-celebrity celebrities, but I can’t remember.
Let me start with the most unexpected statement made by a right wing spokesperson with regards to Obama’s fundraiser at George Cloney’s house this week, well, who are we kidding, we totally expected it:
Kirsten Kukowski, the Republican National Committee spokesman, said Mr. Obama's closeness to movie stars would backfire.
She said: "We want someone who will keep their nose to the grindstone, who will create jobs, rather than spend all this time trying to be BFF's with George Clooney."
I had been waiting for news on this event since I heard on NPR while driving to work that they were raffling off tickets to regular people. Anyone who wished to attend had a chance to win an invitation with air fare included if they registered online for the event. When I heard there was an opportunity to meet George Clooney, the most handsome man over 50, and I am usually into the younger guys, and on top of that meet our fabulous president, I told myself not to forget about it and register. Well, I forgot, and when I finally remembered and went to the web site, the contest had ended. Bummer.
Now that the event took place I had to look who were those lucky ladies that got chosen to attend the event. Here is the information about the winners:
The dinner raised US $6 million from ticket sales and another $9 million from an online sweepstake offering two pairs of seats for "dinner with Barack and George," along with air fares. Entry was $3. Winners of the political equivalent of Willy Wonka's golden tickets were Beth Topinka, a teacher from New Jersey, and Karen Blutcher, the mother of a five-year-old son with Downs syndrome. Both brought their husbands as dates.
Wow, the online sweepstakes raised more money than the celebrities! I am pretty sure they will do it again. What a great idea. And who of you thinks such a sweepstake would raise more than $10,000 if the winning ticket would get you to see Jolie’s dad and Romney. Raise your hands. Yeah, I thought so. Nobody.
Update: Just saw an ad "Dinner with Barack" but what about Clooney? Ah, I guess that is why it's free now. Come on, they could not get at least Brad Pitt or Ashton Kutcher to sign up for this?
