I've seen a very upsetting trend over the past few weeks, even longer perhaps, and I wanted to address it. I saw it again when Arnold Schwarzenegger came out against far right control of the GOP. He has joined a long list of people that have called out the Tea Party and other fascists on their lunacy and inability to compromise. This has caused more than a few moderate Republicans to take a look at Obama rather than Romney, or to at the very least try to fight back against the more extreme elements of the party. I've even seen some diaries written by moderate Republicans on this site, fearing being taken over by people who want Idaho to be its own country. To these people I say one thing:
Go away and form your own party. I have no pity for you.
I have very little pity for Schwarzenegger and for any other Republican politician who claims to be moderate, but have known about these elements within their own party but refused to do anything about them. Sure, perhaps they were just "loonies on the fringe," worthy of no attention at all. However, ignoring them has not been a fruitful strategy, has it? Moderate Republican silence on the many travesties of the far right, from birtherism to extreme legislation from abortion to immigration, has given the far right the confidence it needs to take you on, and now you're losing. Well, too bad. I don't want you to water down our side of the aisle with weak compromises and the same failed policies that brought us to disaster. I don't want the ACA and it's reliance on for profit health care; I want single payer. It will be more difficult to achieve results and purity from my own side if I have to worry about selling out my ideals with yours. It is all too clear to me that many Republican refugees are simply stuck in the "Democrats are evil!" frame of thinking and refuse to fundamentally change. We see this from the owner of the bakery of the cookies that Romney insulted being interviewed by Lawrence O'Donnell and not simply admitting to himself that his candidate looks down on him and always will.
I have no love for the far right, but really, I have no love for you either because your ideology spawned them. You stood idly by while the Koch bros. funded their gatherings and propped up celebrities to stir the fascist masses. You never thought that being against gay marriage out of fealty to a debunked desert religion could warp into people hunting gay teenagers down until they commit suicide, but now you see it, and you don't know what to do.
Frankly, I'll continue fighting my fight, and you'll just have to pick up the pieces.
