NOTE THAT UPDATES ARE AT END

Diamond has SERIOUSLY screwed up and it's really making me angry.

Read the overall story here.

Yet the Missouri-based maker of Diamond, Premium Edge, Kirkland Signature, and other pet food brands has not called special attention to the expansion of the recall to cat food beyond amending a statement on the company’s Internet recall site: “Diamond Pet Foods has voluntarily recalled some brands of dry dog and cat food that it manufactured in its Gaston, S.C. facility between December 9, 2011 and April 7, 2012 due to potential Salmonella contamination.”

There is no specific information on which brands and batches of cat food may be affected, though you can check a questionable bag's product code to find out. [bolding mine]

Diamond needs to list EVERY brand, kind etc. and get the info out.  But since they are apparently too damn lazy, I guess it's up to newspapers and blogs and people like us.

This really angers me.

So... here is the diamond site addressing it.

--------------------------

On Friday morning, the Calgary Herald in Alberta, Canada, reported that two cats in a Montreal animal shelter have died, and another is ill, after eating Diamond Pet Foods products. Also in Quebec, another person has been reported with a case of salmonella, bringing the total number of cases to 16 in the United States and Canada caused apparently by handling the pet food. [bolding mine]
So...

Here are the recalled BRANDS in their entirety FOR DOG FOOD:

Natural Balance
Solid Gold
Wellness
Chicken Soup for the Pet Lover’s Soul
Country Value
Diamond
Diamond Naturals
Premium Edge
Professional
4 Health
Taste of the Wild
Apex
Kirkland Signature/Kirkland’s Signature Nature’s Domain

IF YOU FEED ANY OF THESE BRANDS, PLEASE GO TO THEIR SITES AND CHECK ROUTINELY NOW FOR UPDATED RECALLS.

------------------------
And the newest dog food recalled (on the 18th of May) is:
Diamond Naturals Small Breed Adult Dog Lamb & Rice Formula Dry Food

THIS INCLUDES SOME SAMPLE PACKS.

NOW... making this even MORE complicated, while the foods were only distributed to certain states, that does NOT... I REPEAT NOT account for foods sold over the net... the way I buy much of my cat food, for instance.

So, which foods for cats have been recalled?

Kirkland Signature Super Premium Maintenance Cat Chicken & Rice Formula (Best Before December 9, 2012 through January 31, 2013)
Kirkland Signature Super Premium Healthy Weight Cat Formula (December 9, 2012 through January 31, 2013)

Here is the date etc. caveat:
To determine if their pet food is recalled, consumers should check the production code on their bag. If the code has both a “3” in the 9th position AND an “X” in the 11th position, the product is affected by the recall. The best-before dates for the recalled products are December 9, 2012 through January 31, 2013.The following graphic illustrates how to read the production code and best-before date:

go here to see the pictoral example they give.

Are there other cat foods involved? I DON'T DAMN WELL KNOW.

NOWHERE ON DIAMONDS SITE IS THERE A COMPREHENSIVE LIST.

Diamond will be getting a very pissed off call from me in the morning and from here on out, I will NEVER buy anything manufactured by their company.  NEVER.  Which means that I will be calling two of the recalled food companies, Wellness and Natural Balance, and letting them know THEY are losing business because Diamond can't get their damn shit together AND because they obviously have low manufacturing standards. I am VERY angry.

I feed expensive foods for a reason.

Please excuse my mini rant but it is well deserved!

I feed 35-40 dogs and cats every day. Someone else will be getting my considerable food moneys which obviously are substantial.

UPDATE: Someone posted the FDA comprehensive list link in comments. The problem is that the CAT FOOD is nowhere listed there.  So if you DO use that link, realize that it is NOT correct as of right now.

UPDATE 2: Thanks to emmasnacker for pointing out that the most recent recalled food, the lamb and rice for small breed dogs, announced on Friday by Diamond (but not by the FDA) was manufactured at another plant from all the original recalls.  This is not good. It MAY mean other foods will be recalled OR that more states may be involved.  So, were it me, if ANY of the current recalled foods are what you feed but your state was not involved (and you don't buy through the net), PLEASE be careful.  For more information on this point, go to Susan Thixton's excellent site here.  I'd bookmark that site and check it daily.

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

DIAMOND needs to do a proper job.  The FDA will be getting a call as well.  Diamond DID just sneak the cat foods into their list without a separate warning at all.  NO ONE knew it was happening.

I work in the industry and have seen far fewer recalls of pet food from Canadian brands. Go! and Now!, Acana and Orijen, even First Mate just to name a few. I trust canadian brands manufactured in Canada much more than I do American brands. The only explanation I have for this is the slightly stricter regulations. If you want to feed an awesome yet convient, albeit expensive, food try NRG. Low temperature dehydrated raw. Not too high of a protein level and it's grain free(ish it has wheat germ which I don't think is classified as a grain and doesn't contain the proteins that generally cause allergies). Good stuff. You are welcome in advance.

They have a freshwater trout can that is really popular in my store. I'm not being silly with the exclamation mark. Its part of their name. Orijen is coming out with a freeze dried raw that you would mix with water and would feed like caned food. I keep hearing different dates when it will be available. Holistic blend has a cat can that is pretty good. The one brand that has never had a recall since 1935 happens to be a an American company called evengers but the Fda has given them a hard time over label misrepresentation in the past. I think they make a good can though.

I just hope this gets straightened out without any more dogs or people deaths or sicknesses.

I have been using a couple of the brands on the list and will stop buying any I know about from Diamond.

I expect if it hurts business to bad they will just change the name of the brands and continue BAU.

info that needs to get out-not only for beloved pets but beloved humans!

My kittycat has been on Natural Balance since I rescued her.  While previous recall only seemed to mention dog & other critter food, I still wondered how all the Natural Balance batches didn't get contaminated...

Immune compromised special needs child plus close contact with various other kiddos with special needs that cannot afford being sickened by Salmonella.

And my precious kittycat does not deserve to be poisioned by the human who promised to take care of her.

So I am right there with you in outrage.

Sunday, when I went to the store-I just stared at the canned cat food & treats having no clue what was safe.

So, I went to the baby aisle & bought baby food meat thinking surely that is pure enough for an occassional treat.

Sigh, of course still had the dry Natural Balance for regular feedings.  Now I am even more angry because I have no clue what to feed kittycat if her food is recalled.  (Her name-my child cannot say many words-but when we saved her a few years ago, my child said kittycat very clearly.  A very big deal)

For a "lost" kitty, she is very picky

She gets maybe a teaspoon.  Same when I did buy wet cat food or kitty treats because most do not agree with her for some reason.

Natural balance dry is the only food that does agree with her.  And it took quite a while to find one that did.

For a kitty that was trying to eat the birdseed we had out-she is also very picky.  Amazed our vet actually-said that was unusual for a feral cat.

      •  Taurine as well. (0+ / 0-)

I spend much of my time on dog nutrition, not cats. I don't own one and never will (my husband is allergic). But taurine deficiency in cats is one of those things that often gets mentioned as an aside in home cooking and raw diet texts and journals because heating kills  this essential amino acid and  the often dire effects of deficiency.

Beef is better than chicken but either will work.  I cook in a little bacon grease and use homemade chicken stock to make gravy - sort of a liver gravy and the cat laps it up.  He's 16 so he needs a lot more fat in his diet.  Lucky cat.

I bought some from Puritan in the event I'd do some cooking for my various feline visitors. It's sold for people, it's also good for people, but I'm sure it could be used to sprinkle in home cooked cat food (after it's cooked, of course).

These half-assed recalls are really getting me irritated. If they have such little regard for our pets, what makes anyone think food corporations have any regard for US?

      •  Nature's variety (0+ / 0-)

Has a line of food for kitties.

I've fed both Instinct and Prairie to my puppies and dogs for years.  They take nutrition AND customer service very seriously. I've sent them the most arcane and detailed questions about specific nutrients, ratios and processing procedures, and received patient technical thorough emailed answers -- or phone calls if they thought a discussion might be more helpful.

I can't say enough good things about them. They're not as inexpensive as some foods, but they regularly email customers coupons for dollars off (or free 5 -10 lb bags).

I've recommended them to many people and never heard a complaint. The only reason that I don't feed Instinct to both my kids now is that it has green peas and my goofy shepherd is allergic to them.

If I did have a cat, the Nature's Variety formulas are  absolutely the food I would feed (assuming that it's a food she thrived on, of course).

For dogs, they're my first choice for commercial food as well.

        •  And for canned food, Evangers (0+ / 0-)

          (cats or dogs).

Another company whose customer service will knock your socks off. Good responsive friendly folks who care. Kosher food of the highest quality.

My furry kids have been eating Evangers for years; even when I feed a raw diet, I supplement with Evangers game meats.

I know what's in the food and they like it.  Now for emergencies e.g, tornado, blizzard etc. I do keep a supply of canned food.

    •  I can't do that feeding 35 animals a day. Not (0+ / 0-)

only is it cost preventative, it is a storage problem!

I have fed raw in the past but made my own according to a veterinary recipe.  I just can't do it now, sadly.
